and وطي به شبهه sexual intercourse in total darkness with a partner that is later found to have been a person other than one’s own wife or husband : In the past this occasionally happened (more often than it may conceivably happen at the present day) when more than one couple slept in the same bedroom overnight that was totally dark and in which none of the four – or more – could see the face of his or her own true spouse and sexual intercourse occurred between one man and a woman in a totally benighted room each of them trusting that they were having intercourse with their true spouse but in the morning after either or both of them finding out that the person with whom they had had intercourse over the night before had not been their true spouse but had been in fact the spouse of another person sleeping in the same room with them. This category of intercourse that is thus styled is never considered as having been adultery or a punishable act but is subject to its own post-facto rules in the canon law of Islam. Such English equivalents as “sexual intercourse of doubtful nature” and all similar other translations that have hitherto been proposed by certain Iranian translators are totally unmeaning and nonsensical in English and should best be avoided for being ludicrously vague, in a capsule form the best possible English equivalent for the Persian being “mistaken intercourse with a person other than one’s own true spouse.”
